The arrival myth goes like this: once I hit the number, close the deal, or make the exit, then I’ll finally feel settled. It’s a compelling story, and it keeps a lot of high performers running hard. But peace isn’t a place you get to. Life keeps handing everyone new challenges regardless of the milestone, so if peace lives on the far side of the next one, it stays permanently out of reach.
You can see it in leaders who finally reach the goal they chased for years and feel the quiet surprise that the feeling they expected didn’t arrive with it. That’s not a sign anything went wrong. It’s just proof that the finish line was never where peace actually lived.
