The Spouse Deserves More
There is a cost to this career that never shows up in the performance review.
It shows up at home. In the dinners that were cut short or missed entirely. In the vacations where the phone never fully went away. In the years where the person who chose to build a life with you got the version of you that had already given most of itself to the role. Not because you did not care. Because the role was relentless, and something had to absorb the overflow, and the person closest to you was the one who always did.
Most leaders who are honest with themselves know this. They carry it quietly. There is a running awareness somewhere beneath the pace of everything that the person at home has been subsidizing the career in ways that were never part of the negotiation. It is uncomfortable to sit with, so mostly it does not get sat with. There is always another quarter, another push, another thing that needs to come first.
The transition season has a way of bringing this into focus.
When the role ends and the calendar opens up, many leaders find themselves in an unfamiliar position. Present. Actually present – physically, mentally, emotionally – in ways the role never fully allowed. What they discover is that the relationship, which was sustained through distance and dedication, now needs to be sustained through something different. Proximity. Re-inclusion. The rebuilding of rhythms that got deferred for years.
This is not always easy. But it is almost always worth it.
The leaders who navigate this season well are the ones who name it directly rather than hoping the relationship will naturally recalibrate on its own. Who say honestly that they know the career extracted more than was fair, and that this chapter is an opportunity to give back some of what the last one cost. Not as a transaction. As an intention.
The person who stayed does not need a grand gesture. They need to see that the shift is real – that this version of you has actually arrived, and is planning to stay.
